Product Wrapping for Inventory
Old City Product Wrapping SOP
1. Identify Items that are ready to be wrapped
l Products are ready to wrap when they require no further processing. Finished (painted/stained) products that are ready to be wrapped will be located between the finishing booth and break room and marked with a yellow flag. Unfinished (raw) products that are ready to be wrapped will be located in the staging square between the wrapping machine and the product inventory area.
l All doors, drawer fronts, and casework will need to go through final assembly before wrapping with the exception of open cabinets.
2. Wrap parts, panels, and mouldings
l Use the stretch wrap, foam, and blue tape on the wrapping carts located behind the wrapping machine to protect products from damage during shipping.
l For long narrow pieces (i.e. S4S, toe kicks, moulding), bundle together like items belonging to the same room with finished surfaces facing inwards. Separate items by placing foam strips between them. The number of foam strips varies by length of product, but can be spaced up to a couple of feet apart.
l Bundle both pieces of 2 piece fillers together (solid wood and plywood component)
l For larger pieces like panels, cover finished surfaces with foam from the foam roll cart and use blue tape to hold foam in place, if necessary. Avoid adhering tape to any finished surface
l Use hand held stretch wrap to tightly wrap both ends of the bundle or product. For longer items, adding additional stretch wrap around the middle of the bundle may be necessary.
l If product numbers are not visible, use a sharpie to write the product numbers on the stretch wrap for each item in the bundle.
3. Stage products for delivery
l If a staging area in inventory has already been established for the room you are wrapping, take wrapped items and place them in that area.
l Use the blue room sheet to mark off each item that you stage by writing your initials next to the item number on the room sheet.
l If there is not a staging area established for the job you are wrapping and there isn’t room for you to establish an area yourself, place wrapped products in the staging square between the wrapping cart and the inventory area.
4. Wrap casework
l Use a dolly to place fully assembled casework on the center of the wrapping machine platform.
l Gently pull the stretch wrap out from the machine and secure under one of the cabinet feet.
l Use corner protectors on any cabinet corners with finished surfaces. Cut corner protectors to length or add additional pieces as needed to match the height of the cabinet. If necessary you can use blue tape to help secure corner protectors to the cabinet, but do not adhere tape to any finished surfaces.
l Start the wrapping machine. (See SOP on wrapping machine for further instructions)
l When the wrapping machine comes to a stop, cut excess plastic wrap and move the cabinet to inventory or the staging square using the same process as outlined in step 3.
